When planning your trip to Italy, have you ever considered to lodge in something different from a hotel? Did you even try to search for Florence apartments for rent? As a tourist guide, providing private tours in Florence, I am used to pick up my customers at 4 and 5-star hotels. But I have to say that, lately, it happens quite often that they ask me to pick them up at apartments, so I decided to investigate. Also because, when I meet them, they are all very happy of their accommodations.
Yes, hotels offer a lot more services, but how many do you really need? And how much are you going to pay for these services? You can rent apartments in Florence Italy, often for less than € 100 per night, which are clean, with luxury features, in wonderful locations, providing wi-fi internet. You won’t have the room service, but hey, a room in a 4 or 5-star hotel will cost 250-300 euros per night, at a minimum.
The only other difference with hotels is the fact hotels allow you to stay for one night, which is not always true for apartments. By the way, follow my guide and you will also find apartments that will accept you even if you stay for one night only. That said, staying one night in Florence you would miss too many things. Rent Florence apartments for at least three nights, to really enjoy the Renaissance City
Today, it’s easy to rent an apartment in Florence. In the past, you needed to know someone locally, but today, with the internet, everything has become easier: you can find properties properly listed, with reviews and many pictures. Things can be even easier by following my suggestions! In this article, I’m going to list my picks for Florence apartments for rent, based on what they offer, their location and their price and, more importantly, on the live feedback received by my customers or the customers of my colleagues. Read on, and you’re going to save a lot of money that can be better spent for food, wine, tours and activities in Florence.
Florence apartments: what you need to know
There are some simple things to know about the city, that will help you choose the best Florence apartments.
The place where all the attractions are is quite small, corresponding to the Medieval city. When you rent Florence apartments, you want to make sure yours is in the historical center, close to the main attractions. Probably, at first sight, you will be more attracted by the apartments located in different neighbourhoods, because they look newer, but no: don’t rent an apartment outside the city center, or you will regret it: you will spend the money you saved in cabs, or will have to use crowded public buses. With an apartment in the city center, you will forget transportation: the only things you need are a taxi from the train station/airport to the apartment in Florence, and another one when you leave the city. It’s that simple.
Well, you can’t imagine how many customers told me they arrived, entered the condo where their apartment was located and were about to cry, before being pleasantly surprised by the apartment interiors. Florence is an old city, especially the historical part, and, you know, we don’t care a lot for the common properties. Many condos look very old and not very well maintained, but usually Florence apartments are. Don’t get scared and move on.
Florence is a very safe city, and we don’t have shady areas. That said, I would avoid particular parts of the city, mainly because they are the center of nightlife, and you don’t want drunk youngsters screaming late at night, not even if you are one of them.
Not a given in Florence apartments, although it is a must-have. Make sure the apartment you choose has air conditioning, especially if you plan to visit Florence between May and September. This is a hot and humid city, and not all the properties are properly equipped with A/C.
Wi Fi internet
It is becoming a standard feature, but better check twice. It will be useful.
The best Florence apartments for rent
I listed here all the Florence apartments for which I (or my colleagues) had a “live” positive feedback by customers. They are all located in the city center, close to the main attractions, avoiding the areas we don’t like, and they all have air conditioning and wi fi internet. By choosing one of these properties, you are making a great choice, saving a lot of money and making sure you won’t be disappointed. I also split the picks based on the number of guests.
Apartments in Florence for a couple
Here you have 2 categories to choose: the first option is a studio apartment, which has no separation between kitchen and bedroom. This is a good choice if you don’t plan to use the kitchen (why should you, with all the nice restaurants we have?). The other option is a standard 1-bedroom apartment, which will also have a separated kitchen and living area. Below are my picks.
Florence studio flat with terrace
In case you want to live steps away from where Botticelli lived, this is the apartment for you. Clean and modern, it is a single room apartment, great for a couple that doesn’t plan to use the kitchen (the kitchen is there, actually, but in the same room as the bed). The apartment can be booked even for one night only. Steps away, is the church of Ognissanti: a hidden gem of Florence, where the painter Botticelli and the great navigator Amerigo Vespucci were buried, and where you can admire a painted cross by Giotto, a Last Supper by Ghirlandaio and a fresco by Botticelli himself. Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, Uffizi? They’re 10 minutes away, maybe 15 if you walk slowly. With a low price and a perfect location, this apartment is my number 1 pick for a couple.
The Dome in the window
This apartment for rent is located very close to the Duomo (five minutes away), and it has a beautiful view on Brunelleschi’s Dome. In the neighborhood of Sant’Ambrogio, it’s close to the food market and to an animated area where you will find more Florentines than tourists. Very close is also the Bargello Museum, a place where you don’t need to reserve skip-the-line tickets but displays top attractions like Donatello’s Bronze David and Michelangelo Bacchus. The apartment is located into a historical building (1600s), and the condo has a garden with a frescoed loggia. It is a perfect apartment for two guests; it can actually host up to four, but the other two would have to sleep on two sofa beds. The minimum stay is two nights.
Apartment in Santa Croce
This is a 2-bedroom apartment steps away from Piazza Santa Croce, which is a perfect location for touring Florence easily. It can be used by 2 or 3 guests, but the minimum stay is 3 nights. Among the attractions close to the apartment, are the tomb of Michelangelo, located in the Basilica di Santa Croce, and his house, Casa Buonarroti. The main attractions of Florence, like Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio, are no more than 10 minutes away. This is a great choice for a stay of 3 nights in Florence, which, by the way, is the minimum to really enjoy the Renaissance City..
Apartments for 3-4 persons
For a small family/group of friends up to 3-4 persons, better go for a 2-bedroom apartment. Most of the houses in the city center of Florence have this dimension, or they are even larger, and there is a wide choice. You will find my picks below.
Apartment near Ponte Vecchio
This apartment is located at the second floor (with elevator) of a historical Florentine building. It can comfortably host 5 people, but I suggest to rent this apartment in Florence for a group of 4. Very close to the apartment are Ponte Vecchio and the Pitti Palace, two of the most important attractions of Florence. With large rooms and high ceilings, this apartment is perfect for a family. The Oltrarno district is one of the best to lodge in Florence, in an area filled with typical artisan workshops.
Apartment at the Bargello
Very nice apartment located into a Renaissance building of the 1400s, with a total of 2 bedrooms, it can host up to 4 people comfortably. The location is perfect, at the Bargello, which is inside the “triangle” of main attractions of the city: Santa Croce, Piazza della Signoria and the Duomo are all 5 minutes away. This is a real apartment, with a very nice kitchen and a large living room, really perfect for a family. The minimum stay is 3 nights, but, again, if you don’t stay at least 3 nights in Florence, you are missing a lot of great things to do and see.
No, it’s not the house of Michelangelo, but it’s very close to it, and also to the Basilica di Santa Croce, and it is a good choice for a family of 4. It has a master bedroom with a double bed and another bedroom with two single beds. This second bedroom is a bit small, to be honest, but believe me: you will use it only to sleep, given how many things you can do in Florence. To be mentioned is the vicinity to the School of leather, where you can go to just shop Made in Italy or to see a leather demonstration.
Family and group apartments
With a family, and more than 2 children, you want a large apartment. Same if you are a group of friends of more than 4 people. No problem: most of the apartments in the historical center of Florence belonged to noble families. Some of them have been split into more small apartments, but most of them are intact and very enjoyable. Read which are my picks below.
Apartment close to the Pergola Theater
This apartment has 3 bedrooms, each with a double bed. It is a great choice for a group of 3 couples, but also for a family. Located at the ground floor, the apartment also has a roof-covered garden with chairs and a table, a very relaxing place. The size of the rooms is generous and the look of the apartment is not the common “vintage” you will often find in Florence, but a more modern/stylish look. The location? Steps away from the Duomo and the Accademia Gallery!
Apartment dei Medici
This is a large 4-bedroom apartment, good for hosting groups up to 8 persons. Well refined, it is in the heart of Florence and also has a large living area. You cannot find a better location than this, close to Piazza della Repubblica, half-way between the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria: basically, in the exact center of the city. The apartment can be booked for a minimum of 2 nights, and I suggest this solution for a party of 6 to 8 persons. You will go downstairs and find yourself in the best area of the historical Florence, at an unbeatable price per night.
I hope my list of Florence apartments helped you to find the best possible accommodation. By renting an apartment, you will spend the minimum necessary to stay in Florence and will have much more budget for guided tours, restaurants and other activities.
