One thing that became very popular in recent years among the travellers to Italy is cooking classes. Yes, our food rocks, and the Tuscan tradition is one of the most famous in the world, so the right choice is to attend your cooking class in Florence. We have many cooking schools, and they offer complete cooking courses, from beginners to expert level, but travellers don’t have that much time, and they’re busy with all the historical and artistic attractions Florence has to offer, so I guess what you want is a one-day cooking class or even a half-day cooking class. What’s the best cooking class in Florence? Hard to say, it really depends on your preferences, because in one day (or half day) you can’t pretend to learn everything: you must focus on something in particular. The best cooking classes in Florence are the ones that involve the whole process: buying groceries, cooking and finally eating. In this article, I provided a list of the top three cooking classes in Florence. Read on and choose yours.
Italian cooking class in Florence
This is a very popular choice, and I like it because it goes through the entire process of cooking. You will join your group in central Florence to start at 9 am. Led by local chefs, your first destination is the Central Market, the temple of groceries in Florence, where you will walk through the stands to evaluate the ingredients (and you will be given suggestions on how to spot the best products), and also to discover some typical delicious things that you won’t see anywhere else. After buying your ingredients, head to a house near the market, fitted with a large kitchen, wear your apron and prepare to cook, under the guidance of the chefs. Based on the season, the dishes will be different, but expect to prepare everything from scratch: appetizers, pasta and fresh sauces, plus a dessert. Once ready, you will cook and eat what you prepared in the dining room, where you will be served Chianti wine to complement your meal. The duration of the class is about 5.5 hours, so expect to be done by 1:30 pm. This cooking class has a price of € 85/person and includes a recipe booklet that will be given to you along with a diploma.
Gelato and Pizza cooking class
This cooking class in Florence focuses on the Italian ice cream and on another typical dish of the Italian cuisine: pizza. It has a duration of three hours, and you can decide to start either at 3 pm or at 6 pm. You will be given some information on the history of pizza, then the chef will teach you how making a pizza dough is one thing, while making a good pizza dough is another thing. There are particular techniques to mix and then to stretch the dough, which are very important to obtain a good result. While the dough grows, you will be given hints on how to make your own gelato, which contains much less butterfat than any industrial ice cream you can buy in supermarkets. It’s time to eat your dinner, accompanied by wine tasting. For just € 45/person, this is a really nice cooking class that will provide you with a “graduation certificate” and above all will teach you how to do things the right way. You will amaze your guests with your own pizza and gelato!
Tuscan cooking class and dinner
This is a romantic cooking class which starts in the afternoon, at 5:15 pm, when you will meet the group in Piazza Santa Trinita. The group is small, up to 12 people, to guarantee personalized attention. You will cross the river to reach an historical palace on the other side, where the cooking school is hosted. Here you will learn how to cook a typical Tuscan complete dinner, featuring an appetizer, pasta, meat and dessert. A local expert chef will teach you how to make gnocchi (potato dumplings) and how to cook a Tuscan farmer’s chicken, and also how to make tiramisù, one of the most typical (and delicious) Italian desserts. You will have dinner with your group, with one bottle of wine served for each four people, in the ancient dining room of the palace. Your experience will finish at 9:45 pm, and you’ll be given a recipe booklet and a certificate.
