Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden , the Rob Stark of ” Game of Thrones ” , will be in the cast of “Medici – Masters of Florence” , Italian-American TV series whose filming began this week in the village of Montepulciano . Dustin Hoffman will play the role of the Florentine banker Giovanni di Bicci, ancestor of the Medici family, founder of the Medici bank and father of Cosimo the Elder (Richard Madden), the first ruler of Florence.
He strolls around the large square of the village, in his 14th-century uniform, smiling and shaking hands at any corner, studying the script, and supervising the first scenes of the TV series: a brawl, a meeting of bankers and a public ceremony with soldiers in costume. The Academy Award winner understood that the story is about the birth of the modern culture and has a powerful impact: as he said in the past “if my body doesn’t allow me to look minacious, then I must use my threatening look” and Giovanni di Bicci de Medici certainly wasn’t a bully, but looked like a very humble person.
The cast will stay in Montepulciano for six weeks, before reaching Florence in November (after the visit of Pope Francis) to film in the real Medici places. In the meantime, the cast is discovering Montepulciano, where the Lux Vide (the Italian production house) rebuilt structures of 14th-century Florence.
Action, and… cheers
The beautiful village of Montepulciano, Tuscany, is renowned for his famous wine, the Vino Nobile, and looks like the star is appreciating the offer… Who knows, maybe thanks to Medici Masters of Florence, Dustin Hoffman will fall in love with Italy and buy a house here, like his colleagues Sting, Leonardo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Will Smith, and countless other actors. The Vino Nobile of Montepulciano, along with the Chianti wine and the Brunello di Montalcino, are the most popular Tuscan red wines. The “Poliziano” is a limited-edition wine that is named after Agnolo Poliziano, a scholar from Montepulciano who was at the service of the Medici family educating the sons of Lorenzo the Magnificent. He will certainly appear in season two of this series. Agnolo Poliziano poems inspired famous paintings like Botticelli Birth of Venus.
